Stumps can be ground below grade or excavated out entirely with the root ball. Which one you need depends on what happens on that ground afterwards.
Grinding is quicker and cheaper and fine under lawn. Full excavation is the right call under a building pad, driveway or anywhere settlement would matter.

Roots run alongside utilities and irrigation. Georgia 811 is called before excavating stumps.

Ground below grade for lawn, or pulled complete with the root ball where the ground will carry load.

Remove the arisings
Grindings and roots hauled away, or the grindings left as mulch if you want them.

Backfill and level
Void backfilled with suitable material, compacted, levelled and seeded so it does not become a hollow next spring.
What affects your price
Driven by diameter, species, how close it sits to structures and whether it is ground or fully excavated. Multiple stumps in one visit are much better value than one at a time.
